Wow! Ok, I researched ketamine on the internet. I found a Dr. Daniel Carr that had written an article on it. I emailed him and asked him if he knew of anyone in Alabama that could help us, and he emailed me back and sent me names of doctors in several states but none in Alabama. (Later, I found out that Dr. Carr is known and sought out world wide.)

The closest doctor was a Dr. Sitzman in Mississippi. So off we went. He did a great diagnosis on Brett and refered us to a Dr. Doleys in Birmingham. (If you live in MS, I would recommend him.)

We went to Dr. Doleys yesterday and I was very impressed with him. He asked several pointed questions and I truly believe that he is the doctor that can help us. He is concerned with the whole person and not just the phantom pain.

I would really like to thank the person again that told us about ketamine. Without you, we would not have found Dr. Doleys.

We will try to keep this blogspot up to date on Brett's progress.

Someone sent us a comment about trying ketamine as a comment to my last post. We have not tried it and it is amazing that none of the doctors in Birmingham have even mentioned it to us. I did some research on it and it seems to be something worth trying.

We have tried so many things that have not worked. As a mom, it has been heartbreaking for me. I recently heard a song by the Perry's called "The Potter Knows the Clay" and it seems as if the song was written for us. I just look forward to the day when we are on the other side of all this pain.

I have to admit that sometimes my faith just hangs on by a thread but then I remember that God is still in control and it is in His timing that Brett will be healed.

I would like very much to thank the person that sent us the post on the ketamine.
I fully intend to try to contact the doctor in Boston who wrote about it to see if he can recommened someone in Birmingham that can do this treatment on Brett.

It is hard to believe that it has been over 4 years ago that Brett lost his arm. He turned 22 on May 6!

Brett continues to do well since his surgery in November, but we are still seeking help to releive his pain.

I came across this poem and it spoke volumes to me as it brought tears to my eyes.
What an awesome God we serve!

Update

It has been over two months since the surgery. Brett has continued to show signs of improvement although the first few weeks were rough.
He recently told me that he is glad that he had the surgery and the pain is less than before.
However, Brett says the phantom pain remains in his missing thumb, wrist and in his fingers.
He still is taking pain medicine daily and some days are better than others.
We ask God daily for relief and pray for strength to get through each day.

What a mighty God we serve!

The day before Bretts surgery the doctor told us that he may have to cut alot out of Brett including one of his ribs. He was not even sure that he would be able to find the right nerve to cut. We expected the surgery to take at least two hours - probably more. But because God is so merciful and does answer prayers, the surgery lasted only about an hour. The doctor was able to get right to the nerve and cut it.

When Brett woke up in the recovery room, he was in alot of pain. The pain has since seemed to come and go, but we are praying that God will remove all the pain permanantly.

Brett was able to come home the next day. He did not get much sleep while at the hospital (anyone suprised?), but now at home is sleeping rather peacefully.

We have follow-up appointment on Nov 22nd. We will let you know what is going on at that time.

Please join us in praying for Brett that God will remove all of his pain permanently!

After seeing Dr. Meyer and discussing options, Brett has decided to let Dr. Meyer cut the C8 nerve at the spinal column. Dr. Meyer beleives that this is the best option for Brett. We are all hopeful that this will take away the pain that Brett has suffered for almost four years now.

The surgery will take place on November 16, 2010. Please keep Brett, Dr. Meyer and the hospital staff in your prayers.

August Update

Hello! We haven't posted in a while so I thought I would let you know the latest.
First, I have to tell you that between the hot weather and his lack of money, Brett just isn't racing very much this year.

It has now been over 3 1/2 years since Brett lost his arm (02/07/07). It has been a very challening time for all of us. Brett continues to keep his spirits up as much as possible, but the pain is not letting up.

Every month (sometimes more often) I go out to the internet to see if there is anything new to help with phantom pain. Brett's doctor only believed in pain medication and stellite ganglion blocks. Many times we asked her for an alternative means for pain relief because what she was doing was not helping but she had no answers.

Through my searches, I discovered many things that could help, but most did not. We tried accupuncture, the farabloc blanket, the mirror box (most help), hypnotherapy (this helped for a while), and out of desperation, we even tried a hologram sticker.

Finally, I found a doctor in Baltimore named Dr. Lee Dellon that said he could help my son. Needless to say, Brett and I went to Baltimore. Dr. Dellon was wonderful! He took his time in examining Brett and told us that with surgery Brett could be pain free! He seemed to be the only one who understood the pain that Brett suffers. He thinks that the nerve has somehow attached itself to the main artery that runs along the area where the collar bone would be. He understood that everytime Brett's heart beats, he feels pain. Of course, I cried - like a baby. Finally some help for my son!

Dr. Dellon told us that there is a doctor in B'ham named Dr. Richard Meyer that could do the surgery as well - but first, find out which nerve was the culpret.
So we went to see Dr. Meyer. He sent us to Dr. Lamar to get a block done on C8. It worked! We now know the nerve that is giving Brett soooo much trouble.

When Dr. Meyer gets a chance to look at the results, he will set up another appointment for Brett and we will hopefully discuss all the options we have available.

We covet your prayers as we face the future concerning Brett's pain and we thank God for his care throughout this difficult time.

2009 GNF

Hello Everyone!

We made it through the 2009 season and the GNF!

Brett had some real tough competition. For the Clubman race, he came in 8th place and for D-Superstock he came in 5th place.
He did not get to ride in the C-Superstock because he crashed at Barber during the practice for the Michelin Nationals and he could not get his R6 repaired in time for the GNF. (He is still ordering parts and working on it. He hopes to get at least one track day in before the 2010 race season starts in Feb.)

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you again for keeping up with Brett and for praying for him.

Feb 7, 2010 will be the 3 year anniversary of his getting hit by the woman in the SUV causing him to lose his right arm, collar bone, and shoulder blade. He continues to take Lyrica, Loritab, and Valium for the phantom pain. Please pray for us that we can find a cure for his pain so that he does not have to take the drugs.

Our family is all doing well. David and I continue to trust in the Lord for supplying all of our needs.

Nashville Superspeedway 10/25-27/2009

Hello!

Well, we just finished the last race of the season. Brett came in 1st place for D-superstock and 3rd place for Clubman. He did not race in the C-superstock and it was a good choice on his part not to. He could not get comfortable with it for some reason that day and decided it would be best for the safety of all the racers for him to sit that one out.

In total points for the season for C-superstock, Brett came in 7th for the Southeast region, 9th for the Mid-central region, and is tied for 10th in the North Florida region.

In total points for the season for Clubman, Brett came in 1st in the North Florida and Southeast regions and 2nd in the Mid-central region.

In total points for the season for D-Superstock, Brett came in 1st in the Mid-central, North Florida, and Southeast regions.

Overall we think that Brett did very well.

The only races left are the ones for the Grand National Finals. These races take place from Oct 8 thru Oct 11 at Road Atlanta. Please pray for the safety of all the racers.

Brett will be racing at Barber the weekend of Oct 2-4. This is a Michelin Race. Again, please pray for all the racers.

Hello Again!

Just wanted to let you guys know how Brett did. He got 17th in C-Superstock, 2nd in Clubman, and 2nd in D-Superstock. We are so proud of him. As many times as I have seen him race, I am still amazed by the ability that God has given him to ride.

We were afraid that the weather would be bad, but the Lord saw fit to it once again to give us a dry weekend!

With the weather as it is, Brett is suffering from much phantom pain. Please pray for him as it makes it very difficult for him to stay focused at school. We are going Friday to get another block. Hopefully this will take away the pain (or at least ease it).

I feel led to take a moment to share with you that the rapture is upon us. Most people miss Heaven by 18 inches (this is about the distance from the head to the heart). Many people know about God (in the brain), but they don't really know God (in their heart). I know that because I used to be one of those people. If you do not have that close and personal relationship with Him, please pray and ask Him to help you to experience that relationship with Him.

Jennings - September 2009

What a great weekend!

The weather had forcasted a 40% chance of rain, but the Lord saw fit to keep it dry!
There were no serious crashes and that is a huge PRAISE THE LORD.

Brett came in 1st place in D-Superstock, 1st place in Clubman, and 7th place in
C-Superstock. He did run off the track and crash in the C-Superstock race, but he was ok and managed to pick up his bike (by himself - I don't know how!) and get back on the track. He then came in for a re-tech on his bike and took off again to finish the race. That boy is no quitter!

You can only imagine what it feels like to stand and wait for your son to come back around the track and know that too much time has passed and you still have not seen him go by! You know that something has gone amiss, but you don't know what. We are so blessed to have the wonderful folks at WERA that always try to find David and me and let us know what is going on. Not to mention what a great God we have that answers our prayers for Brett's safety!

The only thing that really drove us/me almost totally nuts was the love bugs. They were EVERYWHERE! We sprayed bug spray, we lit citronell candles, we put fabric softners all around us! and yet, the little bugs would not go away! Fortunately, they do not bite or sting. I wish I had known about them before we went on the trip.
When I got home, the first thing I did was go to the internet! I discovered that if you put Dawn, Joy, or some other dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle mixed with water, it will kill the little pests! We will hang on to this for future reference!

We met some really nice people at the track. Bill and Leigh (I hope I am spelling her name right). Their last name is Hayes. This did not even register with me until Leigh said that her nephew raced with the AMA's. I said, "Oh really! What is his name?" To which she replied, "Josh Hayes". Boy did I feel STOOOOOPID! We found out that Bill taught Josh how to ride. I look forward to seeing them again soon.

Talladega 8/23 weekend

Hello Everyone!

Brett did well at talley. He came in 9th in C-Superstock, 4th in Clubman, and 3rd in D-superstock. (Photo's to follow soon.)

The weather was good, no rain, a nice breeze, and just a little too warm at times. I am glad that the weather is beginning to cool.

We head out for Jennings next and then to Barber, Nashville, (maybe Barber again), then the Grand National Finials at Road Atlanta. This will complete the season for 2009. We are not sure what is in store for the 2010 season as Brett is quickly running out of money.

Please pray for
1. Brett's safety
2. Brett to do well in school
3. Brett's phantom pain to cease.

Most of all pray for Brett to follow God's leadership in his life.

CCS Race at Barber Motor Sport Park - August 15 & 16

It was another hot race weekend at the Barber Motor Sport Park. Brett raced the R6 and continued to improve on his lap times. The CCS racers proved to be capable competitors and I think they could hold their own against the WERA racers.

Coleen’s sister, Mary Ann, spent the weekend at the track with us and it was nice to have her with us.

We met several new friends, and I loaned my leathers to a fellow named David White from West Virginia.

We also met a chaplain named Ray Rozzio from Nashville and Keith Sharon from North Carolina. Both were kind and agreed to pray for Brett’s pain management and future opportunities to share his testimony.

On to Talladega grad prix this weekend and Brett starts school next week.

Brett did well this weekend! He came in 3rd place in Clubman, 3rd place in

I was reading through some of the old posts and watched the Fox News report on Brett. I wonder if they know that he actually has his race license now and is doing as well as he is.

Carolina Motorsports Park 7/18/09 - 7/19/09

This weekend was great! The weather was nice and Brett stayed up on two wheels!
The track was bumpy "As all get out"!
He came in 3rd place in Clubman, 2nd place in D-Superstock, and 12th place in
C-Superstock! We are so proud of him.

There is absolutely NOTHING to do in Kershaw, SC! You would have to travel 20 miles in either direction to get to town. But we did manage to find a decent hotel to stay in - the Executive Inn.

June Races

Hello!

It has been a few weeks since I have posted because we have been so busy. We went to Talladega Gran Prix Raceway (Lil Tally) on June 13th and 14th. It rained. Brett came in 7th on the R6, 4th in Clubman, and 2nd in D-Superstock. We had just bought a new First Up and the storm that hit tore up both our First Up and our EZ UP. What a mess!
David brought them both home and fixed them. Go David!

On June 26th and 27th we went to Road Atlanta. The heat was unbearable! Brett came in 5th in Clubman (race # 9) and 4th in Superstock (race # 7). He was not able to race the R6 (race # 12) because the heat got the best of him. He came in from race # 9 and layed on the ground. His face was very red and he was extremely hot. The fan was turned on him, but it only blew hot air. We cooled him down as best we could then he got in his truck with the a/c on full blast. He did not cool down enough by race # 12 to race his R6.

I recently found on the website www.bamarides.com an article and a video of Brett. You should go check it out.

Our next trip is to Carolina Motorsports Park in SC. Please pray for all the riders as the summer progresses. Please pray for Brett's pain to go away.

Roebling Road June 6 & 7, 2009

What a great trip! I am glad that we all brought our webbed feet along!
We had never been to Savannah before so we decided to leave on Thursday, sight see on Friday and part of Saturday, spend Sunday at the track, and head home on Monday.

The races went well. Brett came in 2nd place in two races and 7th in another.
The first race was the D Superstock (he came in 2nd), the second race was Clubman (he came in 2nd place) he only missed getting 1st place by 1/2 of a bike length.
He came in 7th in the C Superstock. He probably would have come in 6th, but his chain was very, very loose and caused him to ride slower than he would have.

Overall it was a very good weekend. It rained just about the whole time we were there. I look forward to going back in July and touring the city of Savannah again. Maybe next time it will not rain.

We hope to see you at Lil Tally on June 13th & 14th.

With all the humidity, Brett's phantom pain increases tremendously. Please continue to pray for him.

Barber May 23-24

It is hard to write about this weekend. A female rider and a corner worker did not survive the accident on Friday. It was a very sad day. Please pray for the families of these two dear friends.

Between tears and prayers it was hard to think of much else. I, as well as many others, prayed for the riders and the corner workers as they had to continue on with the race weekend. It had to be hard for the riders to go around that side of the track without thinking of their friends and tearing up.

Saturday's practice seemed to go well. Brett did not race that day. The day went by in sort of a blur as thoughts of Friday kept me praying and crying for the families that lost loved ones.

It was Sunday morning when Brett had to get back on the track. His first practice started out well with the first lap, but before he finished the second lap, he went down. I did not see him come back around and I knew that something was amiss. I had already been praying and had a peace that it was not going to be bad news. Don't get me wrong, I still had the "Mama worry" going on, but my faith was strong. He did mess up his R6 and had to work on it. He missed all his other practices. It did not help that it rained all morning long at the track.

Race time came and after working all morning on the R6, Brett was ready to race. He got on the track, went around for the warm up lap, and before he got back to the starting grid, the brakes locked up and the bike would not move. Thank the Lord that it happened during the warm up lap and not during the race. We are also thankful that Brett was behind most of the other riders. The corner workers quickly got Brett and his bike off the track, but that was the end of the race day for Brett on the R6.

He did race his Hawk later in the day in two different races, but did not place like he wanted to. During his second race, the rain began to fall again. Since he had race slicks on, he slowed down and he finish safely.

After what happened on Friday, Sunday was a day of great concern for me. I can only praise God for His protection of Brett. There is always a measure of fear when your loved ones are on the track, but you can only put your faith, hope, and trust in God.

Please pray for the riders and the corner workers! The corner workers work very hard to keep the riders safe to the point of risking their own safety. I don't know why the Lord chose to take the lives of the two this weekend, but I do know that He has a purpose. God never said that bad things wouldn't happen, but He promised us that He would be there for us when they do.

Brett still has a hard time with the phantom pains. We pray for the Lord to take away the pain and we know that He will, but we ask for your prayers.

Brett starts the next semester at Jeff State on June 1st. Please pray for him to do well in school.

Hello!

What a great day it was! All the riders did very well at Barber. I am always glad to see old and new friends at the track. The day went well for the Cole family. Brett never ceases to amaze me! The fastest lap time on record for Barber is 1:23. The average time is about 1:35(for the fastest guys).

Brett's time was in the 1:40's. Not bad for a one armed guy! This was only the 7th time he had been on the R6.

He used to only ride a Honda Hawk 650 GT. Now he is on a Yamaha R6 (600). I do not know much about bikes, but I do know (from listening to others) that the R6 is much faster and much more powerful than a Hawk! So, getting used to the bike is probably somewhat of a big deal. Others tell me it is a major jump in speed and power.

We have a new friend, Robin, who took some video of Brett riding at Barber. I will try to get it posted soon.

The next WERA race that Brett will be in is at Barber on May 23rd and 24th. He will probably only practice on Saturday morning, but he will race on Sunday afternoon.

Nashville Superspeedway April 25-26, 2009

Hello Everyone!

We had another great weekend! The weather was very nice - a little warm with a nice breeze. The races all went well. We met a guy from California who was traveling around to ride track days on tracks that he had never been on before. He was going to Barber on Saturday. I hope he enjoyed it as much as we do!

Brett raced in three races this weekend. D-Superstock (he came in 3rd), Clubman (he came in 2nd), and C-Superstock (he came in 5th). I was glad to see that he stayed up on two wheels and finished the races. He had alot of pain in his right shoulder, but since it was physical, we were able to massage it out. We did not stay around for the trophy presentation because it was a 3.5 hour drive back home and Brett had school on Monday morning. So we just picked up the trophies and headed home.

Brett will be at Barber on Thursday, April 30th for a track day with Sportbike Track Time for a "ride with the pros" day. Some of the AMA racers will be there and it should be alot of fun. Brett will also be racing at Barber on May 23rd and 24th. This is one of the few times that Brett will race locally. Many of you have wanted to come and support him and this would be a good oppertunity for you to do so.

March 2009 Race at Jennings

What a great weekend! The weather was fantastic. It was about 80-85 degrees with the wind blowing. Although a little too warm in the sun, it was wonderful in the shade.

The practices went well for Brett. He increased his speed and got more comfortable with the R6 start. He had a good scare in one of the practices but never crashed or left the track. It is a good thing I don't know what goes on while he is on the track.

Brett did very well. He came in first place in the Clubman race, second place in the D Superstock race, and he stayed up on two wheels in the C Superstock race. Actually, he came in eighth place. We are proud of you, Brett! (WERA has new trophies this year and they are very nice!)

Please pray for the safety of all the riders. One fellow (a novice racer) did have to be air lifted. I am not sure of the details, but please pray for him and his family.

At one point during a race, a turtle decided to cross the track. She was an expectant mother. The rider did not see her until it was too late. The race had to be stopped until the clean up crew finished their task of getting the track safe again for the racers.

So many unexpected things of this nature can happen. I have seen videos of racers coming across snakes, dogs, birds, etc. Sometimes these unexpected track visitors cause major problems (crashes) for the racers. Again, please pray for the safety of the racers.

Brett still suffers from phantom pain. I asked the doctor about it and she said that because of the amount of nerve damage it would take longer for Brett to heal than most folks. It has been two years. She thinks that in another two years he could be off of all his medication.

We have given up on the acupuncture. Brett went for 6 or 7 visits but did not get any relief. He decided that it was not for him. We did buy a blanket for him called Farabloc. This blanket does give him some relief - not near what he needs - but it does help some.

First Race Weekend of 2009

Hello!

February 7 & 8, 2009 - What a weekend! The weather could not have been better for the month of February or for the first race of the season!

The race was at Lil Talley and there were a lot of racers there. There were also a few crashes but nothing too serious (that I know of).

Brett could tell that it had been a few months since he had been on his bikes. Overall I would say he did very well.

This weekend was especially hard for our family as it was Feb 7, 2007 that Brett lost his arm when he was hit by a woman (with a suspended license) driving an SUV.

In C-Superstock expert, he came in 12th place. This is the race that he rode his new (to him) R6. He had only been on the bike a total of 4 times before the race. So, not bad for his 5th time to ever be on the bike!

He came in 5th place in Clubman expert, and 3rd place in D-Superstock expert.
Needless to say, I was happy that he was able to stay up on two wheels (although he did accidently raise the front wheel off the ground on the R6).

Brett did collect his 3 First Place number plates for the 2008 season in Novice for the Southeast region, North Florida region, and Mid-central region.

I will post pictures as soon as I get them. VHS does a great job on the photos!

Please pray for Brett as we go through the race season that God will keep him safe from all harm, evil, sickness, pain, and death.

Please pray for God to heal his phantom pain as well. With the Spring comes lots of pressure changes in the weather and this really brings on the pain for him.
Brett has a wonderful doctor (A. Walsh) that helps him manage his pain. She tells us that in another two years she expects Brett to be off all of his medications.

Just wanted to give everyone a quick update.

The race season is starting on Feb 7th. How ironic is that? Well, for those of you that don't remember, that is the day that Brett was hit by the woman in the Suv and lost his arm (2007).

He will be racing at Little Talladega. Please pray for his safety!

He is trying something new for his phantom pain. He is going to a doctor who is doing acupuncture on him. He has only been once, but he plans to go for at least 10 visits. We will let you know if it helps.

Hello everyone!

Just thought I would give a quick update.

On Saturday, Brett took his 2006 R6 to Barber Motorsport Park and rode in a track day with Elite Sportbike. This was his first time to ride the bike. He was very smart to start slowly and carefully. As the day progressed so did Brett's speed. It wasn't long before he was flying around the track and dragging his knees through the curves.

Saturday was David's birthday, and Brett wanted him to be able to sleep in. So, I got the pleasure of being Brett's helper that morning - although, those of you that know Brett know that he did not let me help much.

I must say it was sooooo cold that day. Brett and I arrived at 6:45 am. I think the temperature was around 26 degrees (F). It did warm up to a whopping 50 degrees (F) that afternoon, but it quickly dropped again.

It was a fun day for us as we got to see Brett improve with each lap. He really likes the new bike and hopes that he does well in next seasons races.

We will head out to Jennings, Florida soon for another track day. He wants to be ready to race it in February.

By the way, when we went to Nashville, Stacey and Brett played in the indoor pool. If you open the file using QuickTime you will see that even with one arm Brett beat his sister (the lifeguard) in a race across the pool. Brett is the one one the left. He stopped short for fear of hitting his head.

Grand National Finals 2008

What a day!!! It was a day that we will not soon forget. Thursday, October 9, 2008.

Brett and I drove over to Road Atlanta on Wednesday morning in the pouring rain. We were both thankful to make it there alive with all the nuts on the road. We nearly did have a wreck but God provided the protection we had prayed for.

Of course, we always go straight to the track to unload the bikes before we go to the hotel. But this time as soon as we got to the track, Brett bought a new R6. He bought it from a guy named Chris. It is a black Yamaha 2006 R6. It is beautiful.

Brett unloaded everything that he wanted unloaded (He does not like me to help him. He still has that "I can do it myself" attitude that he had when he was about 2 or 3 years old). He did let me help him set up the Easyup. We then went to the hotel and prayed for the deluge to stop - it did slow way down but it continued to rain. David and Stacey got in late Wednesday night. We all said good night and went off to sleep.

The next morning we woke to the sunshine which lasted only moments before the rain came down again. It rained steadily most of the morning but it stayed wet and misty until all of Brett's races were over.

The practices went well in spite of the rain. Most racers were well prepared. It was the unexpected wheel problem that about did me in.

Brett went to change his race slicks for the street tires he brought with him, but they ended up having a problem with the wheels. Time was ticking and Brett's races started soon. So I ran (no, I mean I literally ran) to the other side of the track to order rain slicks from Stick boy (He is such a super guy.) Suddenly, I realized that I had Brett's ear plugs in my pocket, and he was fixing to have to go back out on the track. So, again, I ran (no, I mean I literally ran) back to the other side of the track. By the time I got there, he already had another pair of plugs in his ears, his helmet on, and was straddled on the bike revving the engine.

Brett came in from practice on the Hawk, drove the wheels for the Hawkenstein over to Stick boy, Stick boy put the rain slicks on. Brett drove the wheels back to the pit and barely got the wheels back on in time to go out for the race.

We are all so proud of him!!! He came in 2rd place in the Clubman race. He stayed in first place the whole time until the last 300 yards then A. Creek passed him for the win. We were happy that Brett did so well, but we shared his initial disappointment.

He came in 2nd place in the D-Superstock race. The same thing happened! He stayed in first place the whole time until the last 300 yards and was passed by J. Butler. We could not believe that the same thing happened twice! Brett was not happy at first, but a few minutes of reflecting on God's protection, mercy, and grace helped him find joy, peace, and happiness.

He came in 3rd place in the D-Superbike race. We really did not know what to expect in that one. We were all pretty happy. David, Stacey, and I are all very excited for and proud of Brett. We are most thankful to God for keeping him safe throughout the season and letting him do as well as he has. We all attended the banquet on Thursday evening. Brett received his trophies that night. He was faithful to thank God for his life and for his ability to do what he loves to do.

Friday morning Stacey hopped in the truck with Brett and I got in the car with David. With thankful hearts, we began our trip home in the rain. As we traveled closer to home, the sun shone through the windows of the car. We found ourselves thanking God again for all the blessings He has given us.

Brett has some work to do on the R6 to get ready for next season. He needs to get it converted and ride it in a few track days to get comfortable with it before he starts racing it.

Again, thank you all for your prayers and your support. Please continue to pray for Brett to follow God's leadership in his life, for him to make good grades in college, and for his phantom pain to go away.

Nashville Weekend

Howdy Friends!

We spent Sept 26-28 traveling to Nashville Superspeedway and watching Brett race.

Brett had his first crash on the track on Sept 28, Sunday morning practice. He is fine, but his bike (the Hawkenstein) needs a little work. He had to race his other Hawk (Slow One) for both races that he was in.

At the end of the weekend, he ended the season being in 1st place in Clubman, 2nd place in D-Superbike, and 3rd place in V6 lightweight (all in the North Florida Region). We are so proud of him.

In the Southeast Region, he is 1st in Clubman, tied for 2nd in D-Superbike, and 6th in V6 lightweight.

In the Mid-Central Region, he is 1st in Clubman, 2nd in D-Superbike, and 7th in V6 lightweight.

VHS photography was not there to take photo's for us, but I took a few pictures and will post them later.

Next we will head out to Road Atlanta for the Grand National Finals. This takes place in October. At this point in time, the season is officially over. Then we go to a track day in November. I believe we all get a rest in December and January. And the season begins in February.

Brett is already talking about buying another bike - one that is faster and newer. He is going to sell Hawkenstein after the GNF.

Please continue to pray for Brett.

3) That he will do well in school

Hello everyone! Just thought I would let you know that Brett is doing much better with the phantom pain, but the change in the weather still upsets his pain level. Please remember him as the weather begins to cool and the rain starts to fall. I believe the weather that we are getting as a result of the hurricanes is not helping any. Please pray for him as he goes through his classes at college as well. We all know that pain can interfere with ones concentration.

Brett has decided not to ride at Barber on the weekend of Sept 19th. Many of you wanted to see him ride while he was there so I thought I would let you know that his plans have changed.

Brett has a subscription to the RoadRacerX magazine. His latest issue came in the mail the other day (the Sept/Oct issue). As I flipped through the pages, I saw Brett on page 40! Wow!

As the race season draws to an end, please remember Brett - all the racers - as they speed around the track.

August 2008 Races at Little Tally

Hello Everyone!

Well another hot weekend at the races for the Cole family. And again Brett brings home trophies. He brought home a 2nd place in Clubman, 1st place in D-Superbike, and 2nd place in D-Supersport. He also came in 5th place in V6 Lightweight. We all had a good time talking with friends. We were very thankful that it did not rain!

As always, we are thankful to God for the safety of the riders. However, this race weekend there was a rider that had to be air lifted to UAB. He gave us all quite a scare, but he is already home from the hospital and is recovering well. Praise the Lord!

Please keep Brett and all the other riders in your prayers.

Jennings GP Florida

Hello everyone!

We had another great weekend! This one at Jennings GP. The four of us left on Friday morning for the seven hour drive to the track. We first went to the track and set everything up for the weekend races. We saw several friends and were able to spend a few minutes chatting with them. We then went to the hotel and unloaded all of our personal belongings, freshened up, and went out to eat. Of course, we did spend some time over the weekend at the outlet mall.

Saturday morning with adrenaline rushing, we all grabbed breakfast and headed to the track. Brett did very well in the practices and won first place in the V6 Lightweight. Our friend John came in from Atlanta and was able to pit next to us. After all the sweating the boys did and the glistening the girls did, we went back to the hotel to freshen up. John was able to join us for dinner and do a little shopping with us.

Sunday morning we were able to sleep a little later. We got to the track for more good practice. Brett and John both did very well. Brett got first place in D-Superbike, 3rd place in Clubman, and (I think) 4th place Formula 2. We were all very excited and very tired. After saying good bye to old and new friends, we went back to the room to freshen up and grab some dinner. We all enjoyed a good nights sleep before the long ride home on Monday.

It was a great weekend. No one was seriously injured and the weather was great(well, except for the heat). Praise the Lord for electricity and fans!!!!

We are so thankful for the prayers of friends and family! We love you all.

Next race will be at Little Talley. Please continue to remember us all in your prayers.

Another great weekend!

Brett and I headed out on Thursday afternoon to Road Atlanta for more race weekend fun.
We secured a place in the paddock for ourselves and friends, Henry and John. Lance was also there and helped secure places for us all.

Thursday evening Brett unloaded his bikes, all his gear and "race essentials". Of course, he wouldn't let me help much. I did get to help set up the tent. HA!

Brett had some good practices on Friday. He had never been on the track before. There were some new configurations to the track. One was a new chicane that had to be changed by Friday afternoon. Too many riders going down and breaking bones led them to believe that maybe they had made a mistake in the new construction of the track. Anyway, I was very thankful that Brett was able to stay on 2 wheels.

David came in Friday evening and was a big help to Brett and me. Stacey did not get to come this time because she had to work. We missed having her with us, but I think she enjoyed the peace and quiet.
Please pray for her as she is working 2 jobs and going to school.

On Saturday, Brett raced V6 Lightweight and came in 5th out of 8. On Sunday, he raced Clubman Novice and came in 3rd out of 7. He also raced D Superbike Novice and came in 2nd. This was great since it started to rain during that race and Brett had on slicks instead of rain tires. Way to go Brett! His time around the track started out at 2:15, but before the weekend was over got his time down to 1:56.

Brett thanked the Lord for his life and his ability (my proudest moment).

We continue to meet alot of wonderful people at the races and have opportunity to witness to them about God's goodness. There are several Christian riding groups that are members of WERA, and we have had the opportunity to meet several people in two of the groups - Christian Sportbike Racing Ministries (www.CSBRacing.com) and Christian Motorcyclists Association (fastlane@CMAUSA.ORG).

The many prayers that there were going up for Brett over the weekend are appreciated more than you know. I pray that many will be saved through the miracle that God is working in him. Please continue to pray for Brett in all area's of his life.

Three specific prayers for Brett:
1. That God will continue to heal the phantom pain.
2. That God will continue to keep him safe on the track.
3. That God will help him through college with good grades.

Wow! What a weekend!

Well, it was father's day weekend but guess where we spent it! You got it - at the track. We loaded up and went to the Little Talley Track. On Friday, Brett took the Ed Bargy Racing School and passed. He got his provisional novice license. (With a provisional license, you have to wear the green shirt.) He raced with WERA on Saturday and Sunday and got his Novice License!

On Saturday, he raced in the Vintage 6 and came in 5th out of 12. He started in 11th position. Way to go Brett!
On Sunday, he raced in the Clubman Novice and came in 3rd. He also raced in D Superbike Noice and came in 2nd. We are so proud of you Brett!

I was especially glad to hear him say, "First, I thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ for keeping me alive and giving me the ability to ride. " David and I always pray for Brett when he is on the track, but racing seems to bring about more fervrant prayer - if that is possible. We pray for him and the other riders before and during their times on the track. I hope that you will remember them all as well.

Hello everyone! You haven’t heard from me in a while; so, I thought I would post.

This past April’s AMA races were the best yet for the Cole family. Brett had first class treatment, and because we are his family, we got special treatment as well.

Betsy R. got passes for us that allowed us to enter the 2nd floor of the paddock building. It was great being able to watch the races from there - inside the temperature controlled building! And the free food was great! These passes also got us into parking lot A. They also gave us access to the courtesy vans. (The vans will pick you up anywhere and drop you off anywhere!) Thank you Betsy!!

For those of you that do not know, Brian Pope from Fox 6 News contacted Brett and asked if he could do a story on him. Of course, we all said yes. Cameraman Allen (our new friend) went out to Little Talley and recorded Brett riding. He did a great job! Then Allen and Fox 6 News reporter Sheldon Haygood (another new friend) came to the house, in Trussville, and interviewed the family. The story aired on Fox 6 News on, Sunday, April 27, around 5:00 pm. Fox 6 team did a wonderful job!

We saw Allen at the races and he got passes for Brett and me to go to the 3rd floor of the paddock building and meet some of the racers. We watched Speed TV interview the race winners. Brett got to meet, shake hands with, and have his photo taken with several racers including Jake Zemke, Josh Hayes, and Miguel Duhamel. These guys are all so very nice.
Jake Zemke autographed his podium hat and gave it to Brett. (I don’t know why, but I cried when Jake gave Brett his hat) He also received autographed photos from Jake, Josh, Miguel, and Ben Spies.

While we were on the 3rd floor, Brett and I got to meet and shake hands with Mr. Barber himself. What a great guy! With a great track! And a great museum!
While we were on the 3rd floor, Brett and Stacey got to stand next to Mr. and Mrs. Hayden, the parents of racers Tommy, Nicky, and Roger Lee Hayden.

While we were at Barber, Doug Demmons from the B’ham News came out and did a story on Brett. There are 2 on the web and one in the paper (April 21st). The stories are all the same, but the headlines and photos are different. Thank you Doug. It was a very good article!

Brett also got to hang out with several friends from the FBR group. We all had the joy of meeting Misty Hurst. She was the only female racer in the AMA’s that weekend and did very well on Sunday. It is impressive to see her race against all the guys and see her do so well.

She had a race buddy pitted with her named Josh. Josh needed an umbrella girl, and Brett was the man of the hour! He negotiated for Josh and got Kim to come and be Josh’s umbrella girl. I believe Josh was very pleased with Brett’s choice of girls!

Brett still suffers from the phantom pains. Please pray that God will heal his pain as He leads, guides, and directs Brett’s heart and mind in the path that He has planned for his life.

April update

Brett has recently experienced an increase in pain and discomfort. On Monday 4/7 he received another nerve block. Today he seems to be doing much better. (We continue to ask for prayer and relief from this pain.)

Two weeks ago (3/29/08) Brett enjoyed another track day at Talladega. He rode in the intermediate group and performed very well. His riding skill and confidence continue to improve both on and off the track. (He was also filmed by the Fox 6 news team in advance of a story they plan to complete about Brett.)

I know he is anxious to finish the remaining month of this term at Jeff State. He seems to be doing okay in school.

Stacey is now living at home and also attending Jeff State and is doing very well. She is also working at the Foodworld pharmacy. It has been good to have her around more often.

We are all excited about the upcoming AMA races at Barber. It is an event we all enjoy as spectators. Hope to see you there.

Dirt biking at Highland Park in Georgia

Much has happened since Thanksgiving. We all enjoyed time together during the holidays and welcomed the New Year.

Brett continues to show great progress in all areas. He has become quite the accomplished dirt biker. We recently spent a fun day at Highland Park in Georgia where Brett amazed us with his ability to ride many of the difficult trails.

Thanksgiving

We had a good track day on Friday 11/23 at the Jennings Motor Grand Prix in Jennings Florida. Brett rode well and I had a minor crash! (Only damage was my thumb, a clutch lever and my pride.)

It was a good Thanksgiving holiday allowing Stacey, Coleen, Brett and I to enjoy quality time together.

Brett has now purchased a frame for a Suzuki SV and is preparing to put the motor from the wrecked motorcycle into it. He continues to work on motorcycles and attend classes at Jeff State. He is ready for this term to be over.

As we approach the Christmas season – I wish you all a blessed holiday season and thank God for our savior Jesus.

Keep up the prayers – they work miracles.

Recently Brett and I visited his friend and fellow riding enthusiast Gary Childs in Memphis, TN. Gary had an accident July 13^th 2007 that bruised his spinal cord and left him partially paralyzed. He has been at the VA spinal rehabilitation hospital in Memphis and appears to be making good progress. We pray for his recovery and speedy return back to Birmingham. It is encouraging to me that Brett remains concerned about others.

Brett and I will be riding in a track day on November 23^rd in Jennings, Florida. This will be the second time for Brett to ride on this track but the first since he lost his arm. Brett has been investing time and money in improving the performance of his Hawk and he is excited about another “track day”. He has also been kind enough to work on my Hawk but I assure you it will not be as fast as his!

We finally received a settlement from Travelers Insurance for the medical coverage and the property damage claim should be resolved this week. This has been an ordeal but our attorney, Leon Ashford, has helped us tremendously.

Please learn this lesson; I encourage everyone to increase their “uninsured/underinsured” coverage on your policies.

Brett bought another dirt bike and has equipped it with left handed controls. He changed the controls back on his other dirt bike so his friend Justin Rickles could ride with him at The Ridge this past Saturday.

I am constantly amazed at Brett’s ability to do things mechanically within his limitations. I truly believe that there is nothing that he cannot do. He rarely asks for help and is very independent.

God continues to sustain us all and He demonstrates his power through Brett’s accomplishments and perseverance. Prayers have been answered and I ask you to continue to ask God to relieve Brett’s nagging pain.

As we approach Thanksgiving this week – We are indeed thankful to all of our friends and family for the love and support demonstrated toward us. To God we are most thankful in sparing Brett’s life and allowing us to experience God’s triumph through adversity.

“To say that I was impressed with Brett and his riding ability would be a
gross understatement. Y'all already know how determined and skilled he is
as a rider on the track, but this young man can handle rocks, roots, and
hills too! I was not sure what his comfort level or pace would be, so I
would ride on ahead so he could set his own pace and then I would wait at
the trail intersections. Jason rode sweep behind him. Some of the places I
waited allowed me to look back and watch him winding and bouncing through
the woods and it really was something to see. I never had to wait very long
either, he was right there. I was also impressed with Brett's best friend.
You can just tell that they are long time, close friends. He rode with
Brett all day and he seemed to know exactly what Brett could do and also
when to assist. Nothing spoken, they just know each other well. I hope
that I don't embarrass them by saying all this, but friends like that can be
hard to find and it was great to see young men with so much maturity riding
together.”

October update - Brett on track @ Talladega

It has been way to long since my last update. Brett continues to make progress in many areas. He is half way through the fall term at Jeff State. He has completed two successful track days at the Talladega Grand Prix Track .

Brett continues to work on motorcycles and he is also riding his dirt bike more often.

Pain continues to taunt Brett but he perseveres. He gets a nerve block about once every three to four weeks and he remains on the nerve pill Lyrica. (Coleen and I struggle with our inability to provide relief. We can only trust God to provide his comfort.)

Our world will never be the same but we know God is in control and He will receive all the glory through Brett’s recovery and his life.

Shortly after his accident six months ago Brett said he would ride again. As a parent I did not want him do anything that could cause harm but Brett is a very determined young man.

I would not have believed it if I did not see it with my own eyes. Last weekend Brett was back on the track at the Barbers Motor Speedway. He overcame some fear and trepidation and successfully rode his left hand controlled Hawk. (See the pictures…)

Brett was very meticulous in his preparations as he is in most things related to motorcycles. He first bought a small dirt bike, converted the throttle to the left side and began practicing riding. He practiced with and without the prosthetic arm. He then took the next step of riding off road with friend Mark Cambron. He finally was ready to ride the Hawk and I ran beside him as he tested his ability to control ride at slow speeds. (It reminded me of running beside a child as they learn to ride a bike.)

He purchased new safety gear and signed up for the upcoming track day. The rest is history! Brett plans to keep riding on the track but has no intentions of getting back on the road. After passing a new driving test, the State of Alabama has released him to drive a car or motorcycle (the only restriction is no manual transmission!)

We received good news recently regarding Brett’s situation with Jeff State. They have granted him a two year scholarship and will provide someone to take notes if needed. (Brett’s handwriting is getting better but is slow.)

Brett has continued to work on and sell motorcycles. He made a nice profit on one bike and paid me back some seed money. We only have four motorcycles in the garage now and hopefully that will soon be down to three.

Stacey is now home from her summer camp lifeguard job. She and I canoed the Hiawassee River a few weeks ago and spent some quality time together. She returns to Samford as a Sophomore on the 27^th.

Coleen, Brett and I finally moved our church membership to Park Ave Baptist church in Moody. We are happy there.

We still await final settlement from Travelers Insurance. They have moved very slowly and have not yet agreed to a fair payment for property damages. We are grateful for the fine work of our attorney Leon Ashford as he represents us in this matter.

We recently learned that the women that hit Brett had yet another car wreck. She was also apparently arrested for selling drugs to an undercover officer. I pray that they will keep her off the road and that justice will be done.

Brett continues to battle episodes of pain. He had two nerve blocks during July and these seem to provide some relief. He works out three times per weeks and that also seems to help. A change in weather, barometric pressure or cold seems to cause the greatest discomfort. Despite the nagging pain, he seldom complains but Coleen and I grieve when he hurts.

We are thankful for the continued prayers and support for Brett and our family. The Lord has continued to show us His grace and power throughout this saga. We have witnessed miracles and the wonderful acts of kindness of friends, family and God’s people. Brett’s courage and determination is an inspiration to us all.

Dear Friends and Family,

Many of you ask about Brett on a regular basis. It is always appreciated and uplifting to know that so many people care. Our family is indeed grateful for all of the support, prayers and encouragement from all of you. We have seen God at work in so many ways that it is hard to count.

Brett continues to battle pain but he seldom complains. We do ask for continued prayer support for relief in this area of his life.

He remains focused on getting back on the track and riding again. He has equipped his Honda Hawk and a TTR125 with left handed controls and has possible plans for a track day in July. Right now he is riding the TTR125 without his prosthetic arm and he has moved the gas throttle over to the left side but the throttle works backwards. He will fix it later. Check out the video on the blog of him riding around the yard!

Brett has discovered the fun of pistol shooting and has been practicing at the pistol range. He is also improving his bowling game and continues to work out at the gym.

We traveled to Foley and Gulf Shores over the Father’s day weekend and visited with my parents. Brett went swimming for the first time since the accident. I think he liked it but he did describe a strange feeling of his shoulder floating away from his body. It was good to see him do some underwater somersaults!

Stacey is working as a lifeguard this summer at the Ponderosa camp near Mentone but she comes home on the weekend to visit. I can tell that Brett and Stacey have grown closer since the accident.

We are trying to return to a normal routine as much as possible and we are thankful that God has sustained us this far.

Dear Friends and Family:

Brett continues to make good progress. His phantom pain episodes have become less intense and infrequent. He has become very adept at doing things with only one hand.

His overall health is improving and he is on a regular workout schedule at a local gym. Brett’s attitude and outlook remain positive.

We enjoyed our family trip to California and spent eight days sightseeing and visiting San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Clara, Sausalito, Miur woods, Sacramento, Monterey, Pebble beach, Carmel and Big Sur. The cold weather caused Brett some pain and we have concluded that he is very sensitive to cold and moisture.

One of the highlights of our trip was a visit with Dug Smith of Roseville, CA (near Sacramento). Dug paralyzed his right arm in a motorcycle accident in England when he was 17 years old. He is in his 30’s now. He had reached out to Brett as an encourager. Dug is a software specialist and types 60 + wpm with one hand. He also rides a motorcycle with only his left hand. Over the years Dug has won several age and division motorcycle races (riding with only one functional hand!) Brett was obviously fascinated and encouraged by Dug’s success and accomplishments.

We also visited the Shriner’s hospital in Greenville SC in hopes of a prosthetic arm for Brett. Unfortunately they were not able to help because of the complexity and expense of a myoelectric arm.

However, we are very pleased with the prosthetic work of Brian Mueller at UAB Spain Rehabilitation. He created a first version of a cosmetic arm for Brett to begin testing. Brett has already ridden a bicycle with the new arm and feels that it helps provide additional stability (See pictures).

Brett was also released to drive by Dr. Alonzo and he has had several solo trips in his truck. Brett is a cautious driver and always checks in with Coleen whenever he reaches his destination. I consider this a major step toward his independence.

Our attorney (Leon Ashford) has done a great job representing us. I would highly recommend him. We received good news that the insurance company of the driver of the SUV has agreed to pay the policy limit for personal medical expense liability. Although it is not much money, it helps salve some of the wounds. It is also somewhat of an admission of their fault.

Brett elected to skip a fifth nerve block in hopes of managing the pain with minimal medication. He continues to take the Lyrica nerve pills and an occasional muscle relaxer and pain pill (loritab 5 mg) and is managing through his pain.

Thanks to everyone that has asked about Brett and continues to pray for him. Prayer works!

Brett had a wonderful time at his birthday party at 29 Dreams - as did we all. Thank you again Tim and Kathy L. for everything. Brett was not in much pain if any. I would like to thank all of you who came to be with him. I know some of you would like to have come but just could not make it, but I thank you for your thoughts. Many of you brought gifts for Brett and we were all grateful for that (although it was not necessary) we thank you all. He received some really nice shirts, money, gift cards, peanuts, cards, and I don’t even know what else. Some of the cards were hilarious! His aunt Beverly even bought him a new motorcycle (need I mention it was a toy motorcycle). I would especially like to thank Mr. Will Ratliff and his sweet wife Carolyn for coming by the party. That meant so much to all of us.

Brett has been feeling so good lately, but it seems that the rain upsets his comfort. Last night, at the weekly FBR meeting, he was in a lot of pain. Usually if he feels bad he can hide it. But last night he hurt so badly he could not pretend that he didn’t. He could not hold his head up, but I told him that his friends understood. He had driven us out there, but I had to drive us home as the tears rolled down my cheeks. The next morning the ground was wet so we figured it must have been the coming of the rain that affected his pain level.

God is so good to always give us what we need even before we ask it of him. I just feel the need to share some of the ways God has blessed us. (These are not in any particular order).

1. Before Brett’s accident, God sent Mark C. to talk to Brett about a different career choice.
2. He led us to a church where the Pastor and the people truly have a heart for others. Our pastor, Donald Jennings, came to the hospital the night of the accident and stayed with us until about 3:00 in the morning. He was the first one back the next morning with a basket full of goodies. If ever we needed a pastor to sit with us and pray with us it has been through all of this. Keep in mind that he and his wife had just had their third son. Needless to say a huge thank you to his wife, Laura, for letting him minister to us at this time in their lives!
3. In January, God gave me the desire to read my Bible through in a year. (That has helped me so much!)
4. He had Brett to become friends with Dr. John O. a super guy – not to mention a friend of the Chief of Staff at UAB.
5. He had Dr. Alonso (the best orthopedic surgeon in B’ham) to be the doctor to operate on Brett. He also had many other very good doctors and nurses to care for Brett while he was in the hospital.
6. David was on his way to New Jersey and God saw to it that he was able to catch a flight back to B’ham within about 30 minutes.
7. God arranged for us to be able to stay in the hotel next to UAB the whole time Brett was in the hospital. Because of family, friends, and our church we never had to pay for one night!
8. He spread word quickly to so many friends and family the night of the accident that Stacey and I did not have to sit alone in the waiting room. We were surrounded by many friends that first night and every day and night after.
9. He gave me my dear friend Candice and her daughter, Emily, who came to my house and cleaned it from top to bottom and washed all of our clothes and brought clean ones back to us at the hospital. She and her husband also own a medical company and they brought Brett a TENS unit late one Friday night.
10. He gave us friends and family who brought food, snacks, change, magazines, lotion, antibacterial lotion and wipes, toothpaste and toothbrushes, etc., etc., etc., to the hospital for us.
11. He gave us our friends the Rays who have called or sent cards everyday to let us know that they are still praying for Brett. Many of our friends continue to call and check on Brett as well.
12. He made us to be financially sound enough that I do not have to work.
13. He placed David in a company that has a wonderful owner and great people to work with. (The company also has great medical benefits - thank the Lord for that!)
14. He gave us friends that would help us and support us through these tough times.
15. He gave Brett a very strong will. (It was hard to deal with when he was young.)
16. He gave us as parents the kind of love for Brett that is unshakeable.
17. He gave Brett a sister that loves him dearly.
18. He has opened doors to the world of prosthetics that we had no idea existed.
19. God has opened a door with a fitness club for Brett to work with Chris L. (owner and great guy) who is a personal trainer. His business is not just a business – it is a ministry.
20. God gave Brett a great attitude. (When he is hurting, it is hard to see.)
21. He gave Brett his life!

Brett lived through this horrible accident. With his brachial plexus torn and his nerves ripped, his collar bone, clavicle, and scapula removed, his arm gone, and even some of the muscle in his chest removed, Brett survived! Brett lived to celebrate his 18th birthday! Through doctors, nurses, friends, and prayers of saints, God gave us this great blessing!

God gave us all the gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ, His Son. May we all always be mindful of how good God is.

There are so many other things that God has done for us – so many that I have probably forgotten most of them by now. God led our pastor to preach a sermon that was so hard to hear, but so needed in our lives. You can listen to this sermon – it is probably one that everyone needs to hear.

Dear Friends and Family,

Since my last update, Brett celebrated his 18th birthday, began a weekly workout routine, hit golf balls on the driving range, bowled left handed and shot pistols and a rifle.

Brett continues to make good progress although he is still battling the pain. He has not let this slow him down and the pain intensity has been reduced. I remain encouraged as God shows us daily His grace towards us. We still occasionally wrestle with the grief and anger but mostly we celebrate life. Brett is an inspiration to us all.

Brett has now been fitted for a prosthetic arm and we hope that he will begin wearing this sometime in June. (The prosthetic profession is a fascinating combination of creativity, engineering and physiology.) On June 4th, we will be visiting the Shriner’s hospital in Greenville, SC., where Brett may be eligible for another specialized prosthetic device.

We are traveling to San Francisco on Wednesday for a family getaway and to visit a right arm amputee that has a left handled controlled Honda Hawk motorcycle.

I appreciate everyone’s continued interest and concern for Brett and our family. Keep praying for pain relief and strength for all.

I am thankful to God that Brett will celebrate his 18^thbirthday on May 6^th. We are encouraged by the progress that he has made over the past 11 weeks. The Lord has answered many of our prayers and we give thanks for his sustaining grace. I ask you to continue to remember Brett in your prayers and ask God to remove the phantom pains. These continue to trouble Brett but they seem to be a little less frequent and sometimes less intense. Brett is scheduled for his third nerve block on Thursday and we pray for further pain relief. He seems to get some relief from these but they have a delayed reaction.

Despite his torment, Brett continues to engage in some of his usual activities. We spent last weekend at the AMA motorcycle races at the Barber motor sports park. (This is an incredible facility that everyone should see at least once.) Brett was fortunate and thankful to receive tickets for each day of the race and he shared the fun with his friend Justin, Coleen, Stacey and me.

Brett spent some time in the paddock area and met a mechanic with only one arm. Brett also was able to sit on the actual Honda race bike driven by Miguel Duhamel. He also met, shook hands with, and got the personal card of Kenny Roberts, Sr. (a famous motorcycle racer with two sons who now race).

Brett continues his occupational therapy at Lakeshore and this seems to be helping him physically and mentally. His grip strength has increased from 112 pounds to 130 pounds. (Be advised that this is a bone crushing grip strength!) He is able to move his shoulder and has some deep muscle control. They are focused on strengthening his pectoral, trapesius, and core muscles. They also encourage him to strengthen his left arm. His scars are healing well and part of the therapy is touch and massage in the injured area.

The therapist (Cheryl) at Lakeshore has been very helpful and encouraging. She has studied to become familiar with motorcycles and has demonstrated a genuine concern and care for Brett's well being. She can get him to do the exercises without Brett complaining, and he doesn't mind when she massages his scars. She instructs him about his posture and he obeys immediately. (Coleen wishes for the same type response from him at home!)

We have visited three Prosthetists that have said that Brett will have many choices on which prosthesis he will be able to use. If he is going to continue to ride the motorcycle on the track (and we know that he will) he will need a device that will not have much movement. Otherwise, he will be able to get one that is myoelectric that he will be able to control by movement of his right shoulder. There are many, many choices in between. We are trying to figure out a way that he can get both. We have decided to go with Brian Mueller from UAB Spain Orthonics and Prosthetics. He seems to be the best all around choice. Brett will need a lot of therapy if he goes with the myoelectric prosthesis. Just being able to learn how to move each muscle to control each part will be a learning experience. Brett will still have to learn to write with his left hand. He was hoping that he could write with his prosthesis, but everyone has told him that is not likely.

This whole experience has made us more aware of the pain and suffering that many of our soldiers are coming home with as well as other accident victims. I don't know how people without faith in God manage to get through the tough times. I am so thankful for all of our friends and family members that have continued to pray, call, send cards, and just let us know that we are still in their thoughts and prayers. I know that it is because of God, family, and friends that we have had the strength to get through each day. We are truly grateful for all of you.

We can't keep him from doing what he loves! Here is Brett on his blue and his red Honda Hawks. The blue motorcycle is his first bike and the red one was wrecked when we purchased and Brett repaired to the current condition. He is going slow but this requires alot of balance and coordination.

Dear friends and family:

We attended church as a family Easter Sunday and Brett had a fairly good day except for an occasional pain spike. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were bad days with a lot of disruptive pain and lack of sleep.

Despite several rough pain days, Brett had a major breakthrough this week. On Thursday he drove his truck for the first time. Not only that, he was pulling a trailer with a motorcycle up highway 25 on the way to the motorcycle shop at 29 dreams. Of course, Coleen was with him and carefully watching his every move. He apparently did very well!

Earlier in the week the family visited with a psychologist and he agreed that Brett is doing remarkably well. The rest of us seem to be coping also. There is no clinical correct way to deal with the loss of a limb. The doctor encouraged us and others to treat Brett just the way we always have. We should recognize that his arm is gone and then focus on the person. He agreed that Brett's biggest challenge is pain management. He suggested a session on relaxation therapy and the use of a mirror box as an alternative method to treat the phantom pain.

Brett had two sessions this week with the physical therapist at Lakeshore. He seems to respond very well to these sessions and we think the exercises help with the pain management. We are encouraged that Brett has muscle control in his pectorals and upper back that allows him to shrug his shoulder and flex some of the deeper muscles in his injured area.

On Friday, Brett began sleeping back in his room. Coleen stayed close by in a trundle bed. This is big step forward as he begins his journey towards independence. Brett continues to demonstrate his commitment to doing things on his own. We worked on a motorcycle on Wednesday and he insisted on doing most of the work himself. I am his helper and he fusses at me like an inept shop hand when I don't do things exactly his way!

I forgot to share an incident from several weeks ago. Brett wanted to run the motorcycles that had not been started in over a month of inactivity. I left him alone for about 15 minutes as he rolled the bikes into the driveway and started them up. We heard the bike engines but did not realize that he had gotten on them and was apparently riding around in circles in the driveway. He said he let the idle speed carry him around as he eased out on the clutch.

It is amazing how we can go from highs to lows. Brett's progress encourages us but his pain can quickly put a damper on things. We praise God that he is allowing Brett to improve and giving him the strength to fight through the pain. We return for the second nerve block on Monday at 2:00. I am praying that this injection will give more relief and allow Brett to reduce his intake of other medicine.

We continue to be thankful and grateful for the calls, cards and concerns expressed toward Brett and the family.

Our prayer requests are:

- Elimination of the "phantom" pain

- Pray that the nerve block on Monday lasts

- Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual strength for our family

I am constantly amazed at this young man that God has blessed us with!

He refuses to let his injury stop him. He says that it has only slowed him down A LITTLE and only in a few areas. He was born with a strong will and much determination. Not many things will be a difficult challenge for him. Thank God for that!

The owners of the motorcycle resort 29 Dreams, David, and I are having a birthday party for Brett on May 6^th, Sunday, from 6:00 pm until 7:00 or 7:30 at 29 Dreams (www.29dreams.com/). Of course, our first concern is for Brett's spiritual health. I find myself praying that Brett will allow God to use him in the way that He plans. Also, please pray for David, Stacey, and me as we seek God's will in our lives through this experience.

I can tell you as a mom that this is the hardest thing I have ever had to face. This is not one of things that you can put a band aid on, kiss it better, and it is over. I feel so helpless when the phantom pains strike him. It breaks my heart to know that there is nothing we can do for him. But we do know that because God is in control, Brett will continue to heal and the pains will go away. We are also trusting God that Brett will, in the not too distant future, be able to get a prosthetic arm that will do everything he needs and wants it to.

Dear friends and family:

Today represents the two month mark since Brett’s accident. It is hard to share our struggle even with friends and family but I thank you for allowing me to tell our story.

We are thankful to God that Brett has experienced a reduction in the frequency and severity of the phantom pain episodes. He has been getting better sleep at night and this is good for all of us. His pain is still very real and extremely devastating when he is having an attack. Brett remains resolute in his determination to fight the pain but he is frustrated that relief has not come quicker. We have grown weary as it seems our prayers don’t seem to be answered sometimes but we trust that God is in complete control of this situation.

Last Saturday, Brett and I attended another motorcycle track day in Talladega where we met George Niedobo. George suffered a similar brachial plexus injury in 2000. His right arm is partially paralyzed and fully paralyzed from the elbow to the hand. George was very nice and encouraged Brett to ride again. George showed us the motorcycle that he had equipped for left handed controls. Brett plans to equip one of his bikes with a similar setup and plans to ride on the track again. This hope seems to keep Brett pressing forward.

On Monday, Brett had the medical procedure known as a Stellate Ganglion Block. This is a nerve block of the sympathetic nerve. After the procedure Brett said he felt great. No pain and just a little tingle. We were ecstatic! Brett then got his hair cut and we decided to go out to eat to celebrate. Stacey met us for an early dinner at Shogun. Everything was great until toward the end of dinner when the phantom pain abruptly returned. We were all deflated and saddened. Brett will have several more blocks over the next few months. The next injection will be on the 16th. Apparently these blocks require several injections to be effective. We are encouraged that the first block appeared to have some impact, albeit short lived. This would indicate that phantom pain is a direct result of damaged nerves that can be treated by blocking the neural pathways. We pray that the next injection lasts longer.

Brett also returned to see the orthopedic surgeon Dr. Alonzo. We reviewed the before and after x-rays of Brett’s chest and shoulder. It was amazing to see the difference from the x-ray taken the day of the accident. Dr. Alonzo showed us where Brett’s clavicle had been dislocated 9.3 cm (almost 4 inches) from his sternum. The swelling from the internal tissue damage was amazing. His current x-ray looks clear and most of the swelling has gone. Brett’s scars are healing and all the scabs are now gone. Dr. Alonzo told Brett to resume normal activities and come back in two months. He gave a referral to Lakeshore for some rehabilitation and physical therapy. We have had two sessions with the therapists at Lakeshore and Brett is responding well. His grip strength in his left hand was measured at 112 pounds. He has been squeezing a stress ball for 6 weeks now and has developed a very muscular forearm. Be careful if you shake his left hand!
My work schedule continues to be sporadic. I have been able to get back into some things and make a contribution but I remain ever close to home. I tell people that if they see me at work then they know Brett probably had a good day. I am thankful for a good place to work and good people to work with.

Coleen carries a heavy load. She is a great mother but sometimes fails to take care of herself. She is having lunch today with a good friend and she spent much of Wednesday away from the house while I spent time with Brett. I ask you to pray for Coleen and encourage her to take time for herself or at least take a break. (Coleen will be reading this also… I love you Coleen. : )

So many people have asked “what can we do to help”? Stacey reminded me last night of something practical. She gave blood for the first time in her life. She felt compelled to do this in light of the fact that Brett required 90+ units of blood product during his hospitalization. I encourage everyone that is able to donate blood. Tomorrow is Easter and it reminds me that Jesus’s blood was shed for our sins. Through this sacrifice and his resurrection we know that we are not alone in our struggle.

Dear friends and family:
Today Brett went to church for the first time in months. He was still hurting this morning but knew that this was something he needed to do. Although he had a few pain spikes, he held up pretty good and handled the end of service greeting time very well.
On Saturday Brett spent most of the day at the track. He performed duties in the morning as a technical inspector of the motorcycles scheduled to ride that day. For the rest of the day he visited with friends and interacted with riders and spectators. By 3:00 he reached his limit and fell asleep on Coleen's lap. This was his first full day out of the house since the accident and he made it a full day.
I watched him throughout the day and could tell he was still dealing with the phantom pain. He carries a stress ball and you can see him squeeze when a pain spike is occurring. It was clear that being active and engaged distracted him some from the pain. He put on a good game face for his friends.
When we arrived home Brett showed more outward indications that the pain was still bothering him but he was also exhausted from the long day. He finally went to sleep and got the first full nights rest in three nights.
We visited the doctors at Pain South on Monday for the third time and had a bad experience with one of the doctors. We received a referral back to UAB Highlands and met with Dr. Ammie Walsh on Thursday. She had thoroughly reviewed Brett's case and was very conversant regarding the facts and severity of his injury. She also has a great demeanor and was very supportive. Dr. Walsh suggested a Stellate Ganglion Block to desensitize the sympathetic nerve. This procedure is scheduled for April 2nd. She thinks that several treatments may give Brett relieve from the phantom pain. We trust that God has directed us to this doctor.
The rest of this week had high and low moments. The pain outbreaks were not quite as severe but they demoralize Brett when they come in back to back succession. He will say that he "can't take it anymore", "make it stop Daddy", etc. On the high side, Brett continues to exhibit independence in many ways. Last Sunday he completed some electrical work on one of the motorcycles he had been repairing for sale. On Friday he removed a tire from a motorcycle and put it back on largely without any help. It is truly amazing to see how much a determined person can overcome.
On the legal front, we think that the other driver's insurance company (Travelers) may possibly pay a claim on Brett's behalf. This will be a small amount reflective of the minimal coverage the other driver had on their vehicle. I encourage you to review your own insurance policies and make sure you have coverage for un/underinsured motorist.
It appears that we have no real hope of justice despite the fact that the woman was driving with a suspended license, seven prior traffic citations, acknowledged speeding and on Brett's side of the road. (She got her license reinstated on the 13th of February after paying a delinquent speeding ticket - 6 days after this accident.) Be careful, she is out there driving on a road somewhere.
We are resolved to press on with life and take one day at a time. We still move through emotional stages of anger, grief and acceptance. God is providing strength and his Word gives us encouragement. We don't get the answers to our "why" questions but we do receive strength for today. Thanks for the continued prayers.
Brett is able to receive visitors and responds well to company but he sometimes grows tired especially if his pain is present. We continue to be encouraged by all the cards, calls, kind words and support.

Dear friends and family:
On Wednesday we passed the 5 week mark since Brett's accident . We are weary and frustrated that Brett's phantom pain will not go away. The dosage of the Lyrica was increased on Monday but it has not caused a significant reduction in Brett's pain episodes. He describes the worst pain levels from 5 to 7. I see the pain in his face and body as he tenses up and grips his fist.
Brett continues to fight the pain with an admirable determination. He calls on the Lord and recites scripture for strength. It appears the pain spikes are not quite as intense but they continue through the day and night and disrupt his ability to concentrate and sleep. His attitude remains upbeat and positive when he is not gripped by the pain. Brett may be accepting the pain and tolerating it better. We return to a pain relief specialist for the 3rd time on Monday in hopes to find something that can help.
Coleen and I are working as a tag team to stay with Brett at all times. Coleen has been carrying most of the load during the week and I fill the gaps as much as possible. My work schedule remains sporadic. I have been able to interact with associates and also work some from the house. My main focus remains on Brett. Stacey is home for spring break through Wednesday and that should help some.
We revisit the orthopedic doctor and review x-rays on 3/27. This will actually be the first time for us to see the extent of the skeletal damage to Brett's shoulder area. We expect that Brett will be released for some therapy at the Lakeshore Foundation at this time. Brett's scars are healing nicely. I am amazed at how the human body can recover from such intense trauma.
Brett continues to exhibit signs of independence. He began writing his name and has committed to start work on writing the alphabet each day. Brett has increased his frequency of left handed typing of email and chat. He is corresponding with a fellow motorcycle rider amputee from North Carolina (Mark Zack). Mark is a 50+ year old that had a similar accident and injury in October 2006. He has been very encouraging and has offered some good practical advice to Brett.
Next Saturday, Brett says he wants to work the crash truck at a track day at Little Talladega race track. (This is the type of event where Brett used to ride his motorcycle in a controlled environment.) He has volunteered me and his truck and trailer. I have performed this duty before and I hope Brett has the strength to help. This may be a good "coming out" event for Brett. It is at least something for him to anticipate.
Brett is able to receive visitors and responds well to company but he sometimes grows tired especially if his pain is present. We continue to be encouraged by all the cards, calls, kind words and support. Thanks for reading this and feel free to share.

What a difference a day makes!
Wednesday represented the 4 week mark since Brett's accident. It seems like months have passed. On Tuesday we visited a pain relief specialist and we were somewhat disappointed that he did not seem to offer any hope for relief for Brett's pain. The doctor prescribed a drug (Lyrica) that is typically given to seizure and diabetes patients. Within a day, we were pleasantly surprised when Brett slept through the night and reported that his pain level was decreasing. We were able to reduce his dosages of Valium and Brett became more alert and clear in his thinking.
On Wednesday when I came home from work I encouraged Brett to take a shower and move around some. Over the next several hours I was elated as Brett began to engage in his normal routine. We spent some time in the basement and actually worked on one of the motorcycles. During this time, he insisted on using the screwdriver and would not allow me to steady the screw. Brett got grease on his hand and we laughed about getting dirty right after a shower. (This is typical Brett.)
That night Brett decided to check his Email and Blog sites. He had well over 1000 emails from friends and acquaintances. He began using his left hand to type and respond to Instant messages. During this time we were able to leave Brett alone for the first time. Coleen and I remained downstairs but this was the first time he did not have one of us right by his side.
Thursday was another good day with Brett and Coleen going out to eat with Stacey. This was Brett's first public outing. He insisted on checking Stacey's engine and while closing the car hood, used his head to hold it up until he could place the hood latch in place. (Thank God Brett is strong willed!)
On Friday, Brett visited the police station to say thanks and pick up his riding boots and gloves. Coleen and Brett also visited 29 dreams (a motorcycle park near Leeds) where Brett has many friends and where Brett often hangs out. Brett shared with me that his friends seemed to be upset but he kept saying "hey, I am still here"!
Brett now remembers much of the day leading up to the crash. He recalls traveling by his friend's house that is less than a mile from the accident scene. He has now seen the accident photographs and is handling this fairly well. His anger and grief is focused on the damage to his motorcycle and not himself. He is very frustrated about the injustice of the fact that the other driver is still allowed to be on the road after driving with a suspended license, being on his side of the road and admitting to speeding. He seems determined to let this motivate him toward his law degree so he can make a difference.
Unfortunately, the phantom pains returned Friday night and disrupted his sleep again. We return to the pain relief doctor on Monday. It looks like we may be on an emotional roller coaster ride for awhile. Even on the good days, Brett says the pain can sometimes hit a level 5 to 7 but now the episodes don't last as long. We are thankful that God has provided some pain relief for Brett. Thank you all for your continued prayers and support regarding this matter.
I was able to work three full days and it was therapeutic for me. I enjoy my work and it was nice to be a little involved again. Coleen had some relief as a result of Brett being able to have some normal activities. We are still tired, stressed and healing and the love, support and prayers continue to uplift us.
Again we all want to express our gratitude for everything you have done for us. We are eternally grateful. Thanks for taking the time to read this and allow me to share with you.

Dear friends and family:
It has been over a week since my last update. These tend to be an emotionally draining exercise but therapeutic at the same time. Thank you for your continued prayer and support for all of us.
Brett has had a terrible week suffering with excruciating phantom pain. He describes it as a level 10 pain and it feels like someone is stabbing his hand. He feels specific pain in his missing pinky and ring fingers and sometimes along the outer edge of the missing hand. These episodes last from 10 to 30 minutes and he cries, moans and screams in pain. He sometimes gets very agitated and active seeking some relief.
Unfortunately, the doctors have not been able to help. On Friday, they changed Brett's phantom pain medicine to Valium and it seems to reduce the length of the episodes. I think it is simply putting him to sleep. Brett has been sleeping in four hour increments and we rejoice that he can get this rest.
Our good friends (Henry & Candice Turner) run a medical supply distribution business. Henry was able to bring a TENS unit to the house Friday night. This device uses electrical impulse to interrupt nerve pathways in order to ease pain. Our doctor agreed to allow this device although they had not prescribed it for treatment. Brett seems to have responded somewhat to this treatment but it has not eliminated the phantom pain.
We have requested an appointment with a pain specialist as early as possible. It appears that we may see a pain relief doctor on Tuesday. The medical profession does not really seem to know how to deal with this issue. Drugs are the most common treatment. They don't know how long this will last. It is different for each person. They say it may pass within a few more weeks but they really don't know. His attitude has been good when he has visitors and not in pain but the pain robs any ability to have positive thoughts.
We are thankful for each day and Brett has been able to sleep in our bed for the last week. Moving out of the chair into the bed was a big accomplishment. His neck pain has eased but occasionally he gets tight around the neck. Thanks for your prayers regarding these issues.
Brett is eating regularly and able to take care of himself for most basic functions. He is using his left hand to feed himself although sometimes he wants us to help. I get tickled when his stubborn independence kicks in. We raced in tying shoes with the left hand. I used my toes and he said I cheated because that would only work with one shoe off. He opens candy with one hand and his mouth. When he feels strong enough, Brett has read email and uses the (MtoC) interface for typing. (That is the Mom to Computer interface for the computer challenged!) : )We visited the trauma doctor on Wednesday and he reminded us that it had only been three weeks. This doctor was on the team that operated on Brett. He pointed out that Brett's injury had a very high mortality rate and he was fortunate to have Doctor Alonso as his attending surgeon. He said that Dr. Alonso has written clinical papers on this type of injury and is considered one of the best. We are thankful for the medical care provided to Brett.
I returned to work on the 26th but quickly realized that I was needed more at home. I took off on Friday because Coleen was totally exhausted and Brett was constantly calling for me. He says my eyes make him calm down so I have spent a lot of time by his side. I intend to work from home and the office as time allows over the next few weeks. I am thankful to work for a great company with great staff and bosses. Thanks for all the support.
We also covet your continued prayers. Please pray for Brett's pain to cease. I lay hands and pray fervently and we know others are lifting him up in prayer. Also pray for Brett's attitude as he deals with the anger he is feeling each time he suffers in pain.
Again I express my heartfelt gratitude for all of the cards, calls, gifts, kind words, meals, encouragement and prayers. We truly are uplifted by the kindness.

Today represents one week since Brett came home from the hospital. He has made steady progress but still is struggling with neck, shoulder pain and discomfort. He is eating at meal time but still not much "healthy" food. Brett's attitude remains positive and generally upbeat. We are all sleeping a little better but Brett still sleeps in the recliner. His pain threshold ranges from 3 to 7 on a ten point scale. He occasionally mentions phantom pain in his missing limb. Yesterday, he told me is right hand was in a fist. (This part is painful for me to hear.)
On Wednesday, we visited the orthopedic doctor (Dr. Alonso) that saved his life. The doctor was pleased with Brett's progress and told us we all needed to be patient. He reminded us that it had only been 14 days and Brett had experienced major trauma. They removed the staples and stitches and his wounds were healing well. The doctor advised us not to worry about exploring the details of the injury at this time. He told us to come back in a month at which time we will review x-rays and discuss next steps. We visit the trauma and vascular doctor next Wednesday. Not sure what to expect from that visit.Brett has received visitors daily and has not shown any sign of self consciousness. He actually stood in the room bare chest when a few of the neighbors came over. I was more uncomfortable than he was. Brett is bathing himself and able to generally take care of himself but he let's Coleen feed him. His left arm is now hurting - we think from over use.
On another tragic note - we have determined that the other driver only had $25,000 in insurance (the minimum required in AL). They probably don't have many assets and would probably file bankruptcy if we file and win a suit against them. This remains a dilemma for us. I feel that we have a good attorney representing us (Leon Ashford) and he is evaluating all options.Friends, neighbors and family have all been very gracious toward providing us with food and other sustenance. We have plenty of food for now and should be fine for a while.

Brett Cole update as of Tuesday 2/20

Brett continues to strengthen each day. He is able to sleep a little better although he has not yet moved into a bed. He sleeps in the recliner because his neck hurts while laying down.
His appetite is improving and he has eaten some healthy food. Still putting away the Gatoraide.
We picked up his motorcycle today and Brett was already planning how to salvage parts. The bike was not damaged as bad as we thought. Coleen cried. I was amazed that he survived. There was another bike in the yard where the rider perished the previous day. That put things in perspective.
We visit the doctor tomorrow. This will be the first time Brett has heard the extent of his bone damage from a doctor.
Brett remains in surprisingly good spirits. I think Coleen and I are still more upset than him.
We want to thank everyone for the outpouring of gifts, calls, cards, visits, etc. Brett is clearly encouraged by all of this.
I hope to return to work no later than February 26th but I am so thankful for a terrific staff that has handled things in my absence. Great people in the right places doing the right things....

1. Pray for pain in the neck to ease. (We are thankful that this is improving daily.)
2. Continued healing of wounds. (We are thankful that there does not appear to be any infection)
3. Pray for spiritual, physical and emotional strength. (We are thankful that God has provided in this area.)

We praise the Lord that Brett was able to come home Friday afternoon. I should not have been surprised, but I was. God was answering our prayers.
We were all glad to be home.
Unfortunately, Brett did not sleep well Friday and Saturday night. He has pain is in his neck where he sustained much stress and trauma on the muscles, tendons and ligaments. He feels phantom pain in his missing limb.
Brett's appetite is gradually returning. He has eaten McDonald's double cheeseburgers for lunch the past few days and small amounts of other food. The Gatoraide seems to be his life blood right now and I am convinced that it has helped in his quick recovery. We return to the orthopedic doctor on Wednesday.
The visitors, cards, calls, gifts, etc., have been overwhelming. Thanks will never be enough.... but THANK YOU~!
We have a long road ahead of us and we appreciate all of the continued support.
Current prayer requests:
1. Elimination of pain in Brett's neck.
2. Allow Brett to have a restful sleep at night.
3. Prayer for us to do the right thing regarding seeking damages from the other driver.

Wow â€“ what a difference a day makes. God answered our prayers and Brett is doing great.
He has eaten a little better. (Cake, apple pie, chick-fil-a sandwich, and a few other bites of healthy food.) Eating what a teenager eats! He is also consuming orang e Gatorade â€“ his favorite drink.
The doctors removed his chest drainage tube, his catheter and his IV. Brett has been walking on his own and able to make one lap around the hall.
Swelling is down in his injured arm (he is calling it is stub) and they may remove the remaining drainage tube from that area today.
Brett is not sleeping well due to a pain in his neck that appears to be a type of whiplash. This pain is rated by him as a 4 â€“ 5 on a 10 point scale. It bothers him move than the amputation. The doctor prescribed a muscle relaxer for him today. (This is our main prayer request â€“ for God to ease and remove the pain and discomfort in his neck.)
Based on the comments of the physical therapist and doctors, it is possible that we will be able to take Brett home by the weekend! Praise the Lord.
Brett remains in good spirits and has received many visits from friends. He is usually more interested in talking about them.
We also received the police report last night. The lady driver was driving with a suspended license and admitted exceeding the speed limit. All evidence indicates that she was fully in Brettâ€™s lane upon impact. Brett still does not remember leaving the house. Please pray that we will know how to properly deal with this part of the tragedy.
I told Brett that I was sending an update today. He said â€œtell everyone thanks for the prayer and supportâ€¦â€ He wants to get back on a computer so he can send thank you notes to all his friends.
Yesterday Brett said â€œGod must sure have something big planned for meâ€¦â€
Yes He must!
Brett, Coleen, Stacey and I sincerely thank you all for each expression of kindness and support. We have a journey ahead but we walk strong knowing God, friends and family will see us through.

Brett Cole status report - Feb 13th
Since the last update, God has answered our prayers regarding improved breathing for Brett and the communication of the news of his amputation.
Unfortunately, Brett was told by a nurse instead of us. This happened Monday morning and began a long day. Brett asked me "why did the nurse take my arm"?
I guess this was the best way. I told him what happened and he was concerned about his motorcycle, his race day, the leather riding suit he had promised to someone, his English class and the racing school.
Brett continued to improve throughout the day and we spent much of the afternoon trying to get him comfortable in bed. By Monday afternoon - he had gone 30 hours without pain medicine and sedation and it was time to give him something for pain. He began taking Percocet around 6:00 pm and has been taking 10 mg every 4 hours. He rates his pain as a 3 on a 10 point scale. (he is tough)
We were excited to be moved to a step down ICU room around 10:00 pm Monday night. I was able to stay the night with him for the first time since the accident. We had a long night of discomfort and grieving. It was good for us to cry together. He also needed me to lift him up in the bed. Coleen knew this would be a problem for her.
Tuesday began another day of small victories. Brett met with a physical therapist and an occupational therapist. The PT made him get out of bed, walk a few steps and sit in a chair upright for one hour. Although he was exhausted - this was a major gain from where he had been.
We had several visits from doctors and all were encouraging while cautious regarding his continued improvement. It is possible that he will be in ICU until the weekend and then a regular room into next week. Rehab may be as an outpatient.
Brett may start receiving visitors for a few minutes over the next few days. No flowers please since he is allergic.
Current prayer request:
1. Brett needs to eat. He does not have an appetite.
2. He needs to sit up and walk some.
3. Pray that his shoulder wounds heal properly.
4. The chest drainage tube to be removed.
5. Strength for another night and another day.

Another long day. The best and worst day so far.
Brett was taken off of all sedation and pain medicine. His breathing tube removed. We were able to partially communicate although it was difficult.
He was very active with both legs and arm. Brett was agitated and determined to get up..
He ‘told’ me to get him out of the bed. Wanted to know why he was here and where he was..
Thought we were holding him down. I think his chest feels heavy.
He still was in a partial dream state due to residual drugs in his system.
Later in the day he had trouble breathing and they put a breathing mask on him. (Similar to what is used for sleep apnea.)
Our current prayer requests are:
1. Brett's unassisted breathing and ability to expectorate. Cough it up boy!
2. Physical, mental and spiritual strength for Brett and the rest of the family. (We have told him of the accident but not of his lost arm. This news will probably be delivered tomorrow.)
We hope to see Brett improve on Monday and Tuesday to the point he is released from ICU.
Thanks for all the expressions of love and encoragement. It has been uplifting.
Although we don't understand why this has happened we will trust and praise God each day.
